Tanning beds have been around, but this doesn’t mean that we are all experts in how to get the most out of a tanning session. There are a few things you may be missing, so here are some helpful tanning tips to ensure that you get the sun-kissed look you want in the best possible way.

Before you leave your house, it’s best to prepare your skin. Shower, shave, and exfoliate the day before to remove any dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. This also evens out your skin tone, which helps you get a more even tan.

Product Use

Stay away from makeup and perfume. Even bronzers should be avoided since you may not apply it as evenly as you’d like, leaving you with a mix of light and dark spots. You can use a tanning lotion, though, applied in a circular motion over your entire body. Moisturizers are also a good option to keep your body hydrated during your session.

Health Check

Some people are on medications that can cause skin sensitivity when exposed to UV rays. There are also people who get dizzy or faint from laying in tanning beds, while others have type 1 skin, which burns instead of tans. Before you tan, speak with your doctor to be sure it is safe to do so..

You’re probably going to be thirsty after your session, we’ve got water at the salon. A towel is also provided to wipe away any excess lotion before you tan or sweat afterward.


One thing to remember is to protect yourself. UV rays can cause damage to your eyes, so protective goggles are a must. You may also want to try some lip balm with SPF to keep your lips from drying out and cracking. If you’re going commando in the tanning bed, those areas that aren’t used to the UV exposure may need to be covered up to keep them from burning.

Move Around

When you lay flat with your arms at your sides, your armpits aren’t getting any exposure. The areas that are in direct contact with the tanning bed also won’t tan as quickly. When laying in the bed, lift your arms up and shift your position often for the best exposure possible.

Don’t Overdo It

A lot of people make the mistake of spending far too long in a tanning bed with the hope that they will tan faster. What they don’t realize is that this won’t increase their tan, it will only increase the chances of a burn. The long-term effects aren’t great, either, with skin damage, premature aging, and skin cancer on the list. So, keep your sessions shorter for the best results.

Take a Break

After tanning, it is best to wait up to 48 hours for your next session, giving your tan time to set.
In the meantime, you can use some moisturizer to keep your skin soft and well-hydrated.

It is safe to tan a couple of times a week. In between sessions, you could also try out some tanning extenders to hydrate your skin while maintaining that gorgeous glow.
